Writing & School Work

THINK HARD - TYPE HARDER

CREATING IS BETTER THAN MEMORIZING

At the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication I have learned my true passion: creating content. Some of this content is visual such as my photography and photoshop work, and a lot of it is writing. I'll take writing a paper over taking a test any day. Here is some examples of my best writing work. Some pieces are from my intern work at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Most of it are pieces currated from my studies at Washington State University.

Published Works

I have had several published works during my time writing science articles for the school news paper, The Daily Evergreen. My articles focused on explaining sciences research conducted on campus currently to readers.

This article is about Stripe Rust, a pathogen of wheat which is prominent in the Pullman/Moscow area. With the Palouse being a major wheat production area this disease is relevant to many in the community.

The discovery of good strains of E.coli made for another article published. This article educates on food safety while also presenting research about good strains of the bacteria and ways in which the human body will use certain strains to produce more iron in the blood.

I never expected to like writing about science for children as much as I did. Dr. Universe offers a chance for children to ask their burning questions about science topics, and have the questions answered by "Dr. Universe" (reporters) and scientists on campus. My article discussed the

Creative Direction

A main component of my duties at Inmar Intelligence was to offer creative direction to the influencers in order for our brands vision to come to life.

In order to create a detailed instruction set outlining requirements for text and images to be posted on social channels, my team met with brand marketing leads to go over the specifics in detail. Re-writing their requests in an influencer-friendly way fell to me, and this instruction set also served as a contract between Inmar and the influencer creating the content.

Check out some of these instruction sets and the final results below!

Advertising

In my Integrated Advertising Campaigns Capstone course I worked with several teams as an effective advertising agency under instruction by Daniel Petek. During these projects we functioned as a full service agency, creating plans books for our "clients" which were assigned to us by the instructor.

Our Kellogg's Protein Snack Bar campaign focused on the Spokane DMA as a test market for the new product. Working with my team we were formulated an advertising campaign including a social media contest to win a years supply of the product as well as a promotional event at Bloomsday, a running event held in Spokane, Wa. This project was concluded with the Kellogg's Snack Bar plans-book and a final presentation delivered by the entire team to our instructor who posed as the client watching our pitch.

Our campaign for Kayak was slightly different and more challenging than other projects, and not just because it was the final project. Without an actual product, making a cohesive campaign highlighting Kayak's unique features was a multistep process, and I was the lead of the creative team for this particular assignment. We came up with a concept which positioned Kayak's "Predictive Purchasing" tool as the centerpiece of the website, and focused on why this tool pushed Kayak to the next level of online travel agencies on par with Cheapoair, Trivago and TripAdvisor. This campaign concluded with a completed Kayak plans-book and a final presentation by our team to a panel of judges as well as Professor Petek, who posed as the clients listening to our pitch.

School Writing Samples

My blog, Shutter Speed, is an example pulled from my advertising class. The blog is centered around my photography, largely reflecting my current knowledge about photography as well as discovering new territory.

In the way of classical writing, I wrote a Classical Argument paper for my 300 level Writing and Rhetoric course for Fall of 2017, about the need for comprehensive sexual education in schools across America.

Writing requires diversity of ability, which is why I have included my Personal Profile, written on a peer for my intensive Communications 300 course, required to certify into the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication.

This Campaign Proposal about the use of reusable food containers on campus for my persuasive writing class in my senior year showcases my traditional and proposal writing skills.
